Failure to monitor oxygen levels leaves child with brain injury

When medical professionals fail to properly monitor the condition of a patient during pregnancy, the results can be disastrous. In some cases, a similar form of negligence could increase the risks a child may suffer a severe brain injury, and such an injury could leave a child in Illinois with a need for long-term or permanent medical care. A woman recently filed a lawsuit against a medical facility claiming that negligent treatment left her son with permanent brain damage.

The incident reportedly began when the woman visited the facility while she was 34 weeks pregnant. She says that while at the facility, she informed medical professionals that she had concerns about her babies sudden lack of movement. However, she asserts that staff members failed to notify doctors of the issue and says that they also failed to initiate testing procedures to monitor the child's oxygen levels.

The woman says that her child was deprived of oxygen for several hours and was subsequently born with permanent brain damage. She says that although he is now 5 years old, he still cannot speak or walk. She recently filed a lawsuit against the facility accusing it of failing to properly monitor her condition. During recent legal proceedings, a jury reportedly awarded her a judgment of $101 million.

Children who suffer a serious brain injury at birth may face a variety of challenges throughout life. When such an injury comes as a result of negligence medical treatment, a person in Illinois could choose to seek legal counsel for guidance on the available legal avenues. An attorney can examine the situation thoroughly and assist a client in pursuing the full amount of compensation deserved through a medical malpractice claim.
