Wrongful death: Failure to reset device leads to sudden loss

There may be a multitude of scenarios in which the actions or decisions of another party could have a devastating impact on a person's well-being. In a medical setting, it could take little more than a single act of negligence to place the life of a patient in Illinois at risk. A family has reportedly reached a settlement agreement after filing a wrongful death lawsuit against a hospital in another state after the untimely death of a 61-year-old woman.

According to reports, the incident took place after the woman was admitted to the facility because she began to experience difficulty breathing and a fever. While she was at the facility, a staff member had to replace the battery on a device that was monitoring her blood oxygen levels. The lawsuit states that after doing so, the staff member failed to take the necessary steps to reset the device.

The lawsuit also asserts that staff members failed to notice the error after returning to the room to check on the woman. Nearly two hours later, medical professionals noticed the device had stopped working and found her to be unresponsive and without a pulse. Following her death, her family accused the facility of failing to provide the necessary quality of care.

Experiencing the untimely loss of someone close due to the negligence actions of another party can be a harrowing experience. Following such a loss, the surviving family members of the deceased could choose to speak with an attorney for guidance on their available options for legal recourse. An attorney in Illinois can evaluate the circumstances a client is facing and assist in pursuing the restitution entitled through a wrongful death claim based upon medical malpractice against the party or parties deemed responsible.
