Failure to diagnose tumor leads to cancer diagnosis

Diagnostic errors continue to be a major concern for many individuals in Illinois and elsewhere. A failure to diagnose a condition can create a variety of potential health hazards for patients and in some cases, such negligence could lead to serious or even life-altering injuries. A family in another state was recently awarded $8.5 million in a medical malpractice claim after doctors failed to identify signs of a possible tumor in a man's bladder.

According to reports, the incident began when the man visited a medical facility after experiencing urinary issues and pain in the abdomen. The lawsuit states that the results of a scan identified ureteral stones and the possible presence of a tumor. However, doctors failed to inform the man of any potential concerns and he says he was not informed that any follow-up treatment would be necessary.

Nearly two years later, an ultrasound was performed and after this test indicated the presence of several tumors, the man was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Following the diagnosis, he was forced to undergo an operation to have his bladder and prostate removed. During recent legal proceedings, a jury found his doctors culpable of negligence, and he was subsequently awarded a substantial monetary judgment.

A failure to diagnose a medical condition can leave a person without the necessary care for extended periods. Those who suffer severe harm due to such negligence could choose to seek legal counsel for advice in understanding each of their available options for legal recourse. An attorney in Illinois can examine the circumstance a client is facing and assist him or her in pursuing the restitution entitled through a medical malpractice claim.
