Surgical errors: Doctor mistakes organ for cancerous tumor

Being scheduled to undergo a major operation can be a stressful and scary experience. Any mistakes during a procedure can have dire consequences and surgical errors continue to be a growing concern for patients in Illinois and across the nation. A woman in another state was recently awarded a substantial settlement following an incident in which a doctor removed a major organ after mistaking it for a cancerous tumor.

The incident began when the woman visited the hospital to schedule surgery for a back injury she suffered in a motor vehicle accident. During the surgery, the lawsuit states that a doctor removed one of her pelvic kidneys after mistaking it for a cancerous tumor. The lawsuit also asserts that the doctor who removed the organ was only supposed to make the initial incision and prepare the way for her actual doctors.

The woman states that in addition to removing the organ without her consent, the incident has opened her up to the risk of future health complications. She asserts that if the doctor had taken the proper precautions, such as viewing her MRIs, the entire incident might have been avoidable. Although the woman has reached a settlement agreement with her doctors, the incident remains under investigation due to a complaint with the Department of Health.

Many patients in Illinois have experienced health complications and long-term or permanent damage due to surgical errors. Those who suffer the consequences of another party's negligence could choose to speak with an attorney for guidance on the best course of action with which to proceed. An attorney can evaluate the client's circumstances thoroughly and assist in pursuing the full amount of restitution entitled through a medical malpractice claim.
