Incorrect diagnosis leaves woman with permanent brain injury

Prior to deciding on a path of treatment, medical professionals in Illinois must be diligent in properly diagnosing the condition of a patient. Should doctors fail to provide this standard of care, a patient could end up with injuries that may alter his or her life substantially. A family in another state was recently awarded a judgment of $7 million after an incorrect course of treatment left a woman with a permanent damages and a severe brain injury.

According to the lawsuit, the woman first visited a hospital after falling ill. During her stay, medical professionals performed numerous scans and tests before eventually diagnosing her with a brain tumor. Upon reaching this conclusion, doctors administered steroids to treat her condition, but the lawsuit states that the diagnosis was incorrect. Instead of having a brain tumor, the woman was reportedly suffering from an infection in her brain.

According to reports, the steroids only caused her condition to deteriorate and allowed the abscesses to become larger and spread throughout her brain. The woman now resides in a permanent care facility, and she is no longer able to read and has lost control over both her legs and one of her arms. The family accused her doctors of negligence and they were recently awarded a substantial judgment during legal proceedings.

A severe brain injury can have a devastating impact on a person's future and may lessen one's quality of life substantially. When such an injury comes as the result of another party's negligence, a person could choose to speak with an attorney for guidance in seeking restitution through civil court. An attorney can assist a client in Illinois in pursuing the compensation he or she is entitled to receive through a medical malpractice lawsuit.
