Wrongful death: 1 dies after having allergic reaction to dye

Having an allergic reaction can be a scary experience, and in some cases, a similar incident can be deadly if the reaction isn't treated promptly. Individuals in Illinois who visit a hospital for treatment may expect doctors to keep a constant watch over their conditions to prevent a similar incident from causing harm to their health. A family has been awarded a substantial monetary judgment in a medical malpractice lawsuit following the wrongful death of a 40-year-old woman.

According to reports, the woman initially visited a medical facility for a CT scan. Prior to performing the scan, medical professionals administered a contrast dye, and after having an allergic reaction to the dye, the woman went into shock. She lost consciousness soon thereafter, and while doctors gave her medication, they reportedly failed to keep watch over her condition to prevent it from deteriorating, and she passed away soon thereafter.

According to the lawsuit, doctors also failed to administer additional medications that may have reversed the effects of shock. When a person has a serious allergic reaction, timing is of the essence, and any delay in treatment could prove devastating. A jury recently ruled that the doctor who administered the scan was culpable of negligence, and the family was awarded a judgment of just over $29 million.

If the proper care is provided, a similar incident may be entirely avoidable. Individuals who lose a family member due to negligence may be entitled to restitution, and they could choose to speak with an attorney for guidance on how best to proceed. An attorney can assist a client in Illinois in pursuing the full amount of restitution to which he or she is entitled through a wrongful death claim.
