Failure to diagnose condition leads to severe brain damage for 1

When addressing the symptoms of a patient in Illinois, medical professionals may need to consider a variety of variables in forming a plan for treatment. Doctors must generally be thorough before issuing a diagnosis, as failure to diagnose a condition properly could cause one's health issues to go unnoticed and deteriorate over time. A jury has recently awarded a man a judgment of $18.4 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit after a facility failed to test him for HIV.

According to reports, the man initially visited the facility with symptoms of facial paralysis. He claims that he was informed that his symptoms were consistent with an HIV infection, he signed a consent form to be tested. Although some of the factors that could put him at risk for HIV were reportedly present, his neurologist cancelled the test without informing him.

However, nearly three years later, another medical professional advised him to undergo an HIV test, the results of which came back positive. Due to the delay in testing and treatment, his condition deteriorated significantly, eventually leading to brain and cognitive damage. According to the lawsuit, this delay caused him to suffer severe and permanent damage that has altered his life substantially.

Those who suffer serious harm due to a failure to diagnose a medical condition may wish to pursue accountability in civil court. Since this can be a stressful and intimidating process, a person in Illinois could choose to retain the services of an experienced attorney for assistance early on. An attorney can examine the client's circumstances and assist in pursuing the full amount of restitution deserved through a medical malpractice claim.
