Failure to diagnose strep infection leads to death of young girl

For many medical conditions, a swift and proper diagnosis could prove essential to providing a patient in Illinois with the necessary treatment. Failure to diagnose a condition can have devastating consequences, and may lead to treatment that could do more harm than good. A family in another state claims that failure to diagnose and treat an infection recently led to the untimely death of their 12-year-old daughter.

According to the family, the incident began when the young girl was sent home from school with symptoms similar to food poisoning. They proceeded to take her to the doctor, and after being evaluated, she was diagnosed with the flu and sent home. After her condition failed to improve, she was taken to an urgent care clinic, and after her oxygen levels were found to be low, she was rushed to a medical facility for further treatment.

Unfortunately, her organs began to fail soon thereafter, and she was pronounced dead shortly after going into cardiac arrest. According to reports, this was a result of a strep infection in her blood which led to septic shock. Incidents of this nature could be entirely avoidable if the proper care is administered in the diagnosis and treatment of a condition.

A family should never be forced to endure the loss of a child due to a doctor's negligent failure to diagnose a treatable condition. Those who experience such a loss may wish to pursue restitution, and they could benefit from consulting with an attorney for guidance in the process. An attorney in Illinois can examine the situation thoroughly and assist a client in pursuing the full amount of compensation deserved through a wrongful death claim against the party or parties deemed culpable.
