Routine surgery leads to wrongful death of teenage girl

When patients in Illinois and across the country are set to undergo a routine surgery, they place their safety in the hands of those performing the procedure. While in many cases, there may be little risk involved, even the simplest of procedures can be dangerous if negligence is present. Should a family be forced to endure the loss of a loved one under similar circumstances, they may choose to pursue restitution through a wrongful death claim.

A family in another state has recently reached a $2 million settlement agreement with an oral surgeon following the death of their teenage daughter. While undergoing surgery to have her wisdom teeth removed, the girl suffered from oxygen deprivation and went into cardiac arrest and unfortunately passed away several days later. According to the lawsuit, the doctor who performed the surgery failed to properly administer general anesthesia and failed to monitor the girl closely throughout the procedure.

According to reports, the dentist's right to practice was suspended following the incident. Even a minor procedure such as wisdom teeth removal can be dangerous if negligence is present in any form. Losing someone close under similar circumstances can be a difficult thing to accept, and may leave surviving family members in search of answers, or justice.

Those who are forced to experience the loss of a loved one due to the negligent actions of a medical professional may choose to pursue restitution, but the process can be complex. When facing a similar situation, a family could consult with an attorney for advice on the best course of action with which to proceed. An attorney can thoroughly examine the situation and assist a client in Illinois in pursuing the full amount of compensation entitled through a wrongful death claim against the party or parties deemed culpable.
