Failure to diagnose rare infection leads to suffering and death

When a patient is forced to visit multiple medical facilities in search of an answer to his or her pain, the result can be devastating. Failure to diagnose and treat a serious health condition in a timely manner can cause a patient in Illinois to experience intense pain and suffering, and in some cases, may lead to his or her untimely death. A man in a neighboring state recently passed away after certain facilities allegedly failed to discover and treat a rare infection.

According to reports, the man first visited a medical center with numerous symptoms, including a high fever and body aches. He was apparently given flu medication and sent home. After a few days, he was taken to a hospital with the same symptoms, along with intense pain within his right leg. Once again, the man was sent home after scheduling an ultra-sound for the following day.

Several hours later he was rushed to an emergency room, claiming that the pain within his leg was unbearable. He was apparently given medication for pain, but throughout the course of his treatment, was reportedly never given antibiotics. After going into cardiac arrest, he was airlifted to another facility, where he would eventually be diagnosed with a rare bacterial infection. Although an emergency surgery was initiated in an attempt to amputate the infected leg, his condition was apparently too far advanced to treat.

Failure to diagnose and subsequently treat a similar condition can have disastrous consequences. Families who lose a loved one on account of this type of negligence often choose to pursue financial restitution through a claim against the party or parties deemed culpable. Since a family will likely find this process challenging, they might choose to retain the services of an attorney in Illinois for guidance and assistance throughout this stressful period.
