Certain individuals in Illinois and other states have serious medical conditions that restrict their ability to make decisions for themselves. Many of them have caregivers that are responsible for important decisions, but these individuals may not be around at all times. In the event that a disabled person is severely injured in a hospital, there may not be time to wait before administering treatment. A man has passed away after a similar incident, leading his brother to accuse the hospital of wrongful death.
According to reports, the man suffered from numerous medical conditions and was prone to accidents. After falling at a hospital and hitting his head, he was lifted onto a bed and allegedly left alone for up to 20 hours. He was apparently unable to move his arms or legs during this time, and ultimately passed away. A doctor at the county medical examiner's office listed the cause of death as complications from a broken neck.
His brother asserts that the hospital failed to administer medical treatment following the fall, and also failed to notify his caregiver. Such negligence has led to the serious injury and/or death of countless individuals in the past. Regardless of how busy a hospital may be, medical professionals should never leave a disabled person unattended for almost a complete day following a fall.
A family should never have to endure such a tragic accident on account of negligence. When forced to experience the loss of a loved one under similar circumstances, surviving family members could choose to speak with an attorney for advice on available legal options. An attorney in Illinois can assist a client in pursuing financial compensation through a wrongful death claim against the party or parties deemed at fault.
