Screening policies for Illinois lung cancer patients.

Illinois residents may not be aware of a recent announcement that Medicare would cover the costs of annual lung cancer screening tests for program recipients between the ages of 55 and 77. In order to qualify for free testing, those recipients must have smoked a pack of cigarettes or the equivalent each day for at least 30 years. The eligible test is known as a spiral CT scan, and studies have shown that such screening has the potential to reduce the rate of lung cancer fatalities by 20 percent.

Emergency room doctors and medical malpractice

People in Illinois may be interested in a study that demonstrates some of the reasons why emergency room physicians are sued much more frequently than are other doctors. The study was conducted by the nation's largest medical malpractice insurance company, and the results were released on April 13.

Illinois woman sues for medical malpractice

A woman is alleging in a civil complaint filed in Cook County Circuit Court on March 16 that a doctor and his medical practice, Northwest Health Care Associates, caused her permanently disabling injuries due to negligent medical treatment. In her lawsuit, the woman is seeking more than $50,000 in damages as well as her costs.

Psychologist sued for malpractice by her client

On March 11, an Illinois woman filed suit for over $100,000 against her psychologist, claiming she received negligent care. The plaintiff was treated for mental health care for four years by the psychoanalyst. The woman says that as a result of the doctor's subpar treatment, her psychological and mental condition has declined.

Study shows brain injuries may cause brain to age prematurely

Illinois residents might find it interesting to learn that a new British study shows that serious head injuries could cause the brain to prematurely age. According to the authors of the study, the research could be used to create a screening test for neurodegenerative diseases in the future.
