Patient files lawsuit following botched knee surgery

An Illinois man has filed a lawsuit following a knee surgery on April 25, 2013, alleging that the medical staff on duty during the surgery failed to follow correct safety protocol. The plaintiff believes that he developed a focal compression injury and acute compartment syndrome as a result of mistakes made during his knee surgery.

According to reports, the symptoms set in shortly after his surgery. The patient claims that he had pain in his left hip and lower back as a result of the botched surgery. He also reports being unable to move his left foot. On April 27, 2013, he underwent another surgery to correct these issues. There is no information regarding lasting side effects or ongoing problems. In the lawsuit, the plaintiff is seeking damages for medical negligence. The suit also includes an allegation of a loss of consortium on behalf of the plaintiff's wife.

The defendants in this case include the four different doctors and two of the attending nurses. The exact amount being requested has not been disclosed as of this time. In addition to seeking compensation for medical bills and his pain and suffering, he may also be requesting payment to cover any loss income that occurred if he missed work while recovering from the second surgery.

The doctor's duty to protect and heal extends beyond the surgical center to the pre-operating room and recovery areas. Unhealthy conditions in these areas may contribute to surgical complications. Patients who believe that mistakes were made in the operating room or that the surgical staff is guilty of medical malpractice may choose to have a private investigation conducted. This can reveal important information regarding if anyone made mistakes and if other people in the surgery center should have caught and corrected those errors.
