Patients can reduce the risk of a misdiagnosis

Many Illinois residents may have heard about the risks of medical misdiagnoses. What many people do not realize is that determining what is wrong with a person is more difficult than most know. This is because doctors often do not get to know their patients' full medical history or because they do not get to spend a large amount of time with their patients.

New test can eliminate breast biopsy errors

Illinois women may be interested in a new test that ensures that a woman receives the correct diagnosis from a breast biopsy. One doctor said that possibly 1,000 to 1,500 receive inaccurate diagnoses every year. They're either told they have breast cancer when they don't or they're told that they're cancer-free when they are in fact suffering from breast cancer.

Statistics show 440,000 deaths per year from medical malpractice

Residents in Chicago may be interested in a study conducted by the Journal of Patient Safety, which estimated that 440,000 people die per year as a result of medical errors. The toxicologist who ran the study asked whether hospitals were taking every step necessary to prevent doctor errors and whether they were learning from past mistakes.
